The Practice of Sit Spot Meditation

Cultivating stillness and relationship with the living world.

In our busy modern lives, it’s easy to forget that the natural world is always right here, quietly breathing beneath the rhythm of our days. Sit Spot Meditation is one of the simplest and most meaningful ways to reconnect with the living world around us. It doesn’t ask for effort or achievement, only that we pause, soften and listen.

As we return to the same place again and again, even familiar spaces begin to reveal themselves in new ways. What once seemed ordinary, a patch of grass, tree outside your window, a corner of your yard, becomes layered with life and meaning. We start to notice how the light changes through the seasons, what time of day birds visit, or how the wind moves after a storm. Over time, your awareness deepens and the land begins to feel like an old friend.

Sit Spot isn’t about escaping somewhere wild, it’s about remembering that wildness is already here. The same natural intelligence that moves through forests and oceans moves through the air we breathe, the trees lining our streets, and soil beneath our feet.

Finding Your Place

Choose a spot you can visit regularly, somewhere close to home that feels accessible and inviting. It could be a corner of your garden, a park bench, your porch, or beneath a familiar tree. The key is returning to the same place again and again.

Over time, this place becomes a mirror, reflecting the rhythms of the world and your inner landscape. You’ll begin to see how light shifts through the day, you’ll become familiar with the wildlife that live there, and how the air feels different from one season to the next.

When you arrive, take a few deep, slow breaths to settle. Let your body soften and your awareness widen. If you’d like, bring a cup of tea, something soothing or grounding like tulsi, rose or nourishing plant roots. I often sit in the early morning as the world awakens, or at dusk, when everything begins to quiet.

Soften Your Gaze

Keep your eyes gently open and relaxed. Expand your field of vision by releasing focused attention and taking in the full view of your surroundings. Notice color, texture, sound and movement. Let your senses expand, the dance of the leaves as they fall to the earth, the hum of insects, the stillness between sounds.

At first, your mind may wander or feel restless. Stay anyway. The longer you sit, and the more still you become, the more life begins to reveal itself. The birds return to their song, the squirrels resume their play, and the world around you slowly settles into its natural rhythm. You begin to feel yourself as part of that rhythm too. Not separate from it, but belonging within it.

Stay for 10-20 minutes

There’s nothing to do or achieve, simply be present. Let the world meet you just as you are.

The more you return, the more this place will open to you, and the more your own heart will open in return. Over time, this spot becomes an anchor, a reminder that peace and belonging are never far away.

Reflect & Remember

When your time feels complete, take a few moments to write down what you noticed or felt. It might be something small — a sound, a scent, a feeling, or a shift in your own energy.

These quiet details are how connection grows. What begins as a simple act of sitting becomes a living dialogue - a relationship built on awareness, presence, and care. Sit Spot Meditation reminds us that nature is always speaking. The more we listen, the more we remember our place within it.

Plants to Deepen Your Practice

The simple ritual of tea can be a beautiful way to deepen your practice by helping the body arrive and slowing the mind. Certain herbs help open the heart and ground the body, supporting presence through the senses.

If you’d like to incorporate tea into your sit spot ritual, you can explore our handcrafted blends in our apothecary.
